For the third straight year the Rangers will face off with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Stanley Cup playoffs, with Game One of their opening round best-of-seven series set for Wednesday night at the CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh.
Two years ago the Rangers erased a 3-1 series deficit to advance to the 2014 Eastern Conference Final by winning the final three games against the Penguins, including Games 5 and 7 on the road. Last spring the Rangers opened up the post-season by defeating the Penguins four games to one to advance to the second round, winning four times by the score of 2-1, including Games 4 and 5 in overtime.
All told the two teams have faced one another six times in the post-season. Pittsburgh eliminated New York from the playoffs in 1989, 1992, 1996, and 2008 before the Rangers won the two most recent series in 2014 and 2015.
The Rangers were 1-2-1 in their four-game season series with the Penguins this year, winning one of two in Pittsburgh and losing once in overtime and once in regulation at Madison Square Garden.
After playing the first two games of this opening-round series in Pittsburgh Wednesday at 8:00 PM and Saturday at 3:00 PM, the Rangers will host Games 3 and 4 at MSG on Tuesday April 19 and Thursday April 21.
