Rangers to Open 75th Anniversary Season on October 11th

by Staff Writer / New York Rangers
The New York Rangers will celebrate the start of the franchise’s 75th Anniversary season on Wednesday, October 11 as they host the Montreal Canadiens at Madison Square Garden. In what will prove to be one of the most memorable nights in franchise history, fans will be able to gain an interactive perspective on 75 years of Rangers hockey through a variety of special events, presentations and activities. All fans attending the Opening Night celebration are encouraged to arrive at Madison Square Garden early as the on-ice, pre-game ceremony will begin at 7:00 PM.

The cornerstone of the evening’s celebration will be the return of over 20 New York Rangers alumni, including Rod Gilbert, Eddie Giacomin, Jean Ratelle, Brad Park, Andy Bathgate, Emile Francis and Vic Hadfield, to participate in a pre-game ceremony. The alumni will be featured in a gift exchange with the 2000-2001 Rangers team, led by captain Mark Messier, who makes his return to Madison Square Garden as a Ranger. In addition, several former Rangers captains, including Phil Esposito, Dave Maloney and Red Sullivan will also be on hand.

The Madison Square Garden Mall entrance will be transformed into a virtual Rangers museum, featuring the sights and sounds of 75 years of Rangers history. An exhibit furnished by The Hockey Hall of Fame will feature select New York Rangers and New York Americans memorabilia, including jerseys, pucks, programs, ticket stubs and other items. On specially designed video walls, a visual history of the Rangers will be displayed. In addition, several Madison Square Garden employees will join in the celebration by donning outfits dating back to Opening Night, 1926.

All fans in attendance for this exciting evening will receive a special 75th Anniversary t-shirt, courtesy of Bud Light, which is emblazoned with “The Captain is Back” slogan, commemorating Mark Messier’s return to the Rangers. During the first intermission, the organization will honor 18 season ticket subscribers who have held their seats for 40 years or more. Each subscriber will receive a “Solid Ground” tile featuring their name and the inscription “Always a Ranger.” During the second intermission, a special performance of “The Rangers Victory Song” will ring through The Garden, courtesy of the Archbishop Stepinac High School marching band.
