Young Talent, Including First Round Selections Hugh Jessiman, Al Montoya and Marc Staal To Take Ice Beginning September 7
The New York Rangers will hold a five-day Rookie Training Camp at the Madison Square Garden Training Center, beginning Wednesday, September 7. Several of the Rangers top young talents will be in attendance for the training sessions, including the club's top picks from the 2003, 2004 and 2005 NHL Entry Drafts - Hugh Jessiman, Al Montoya and Marc Staal
, respectively. Also included on the camp roster will be goaltender Henrik Lundqvist
, who captured the Swedish Elite League's MVP award last year, Jarkko Immonen, a top scorer in the Finnish Senior League, and Nigel Dawes, gold medalist with Canada's 2005 World Junior team.
"The Rookie Camp will give us a great opportunity to see our organization's top prospects competing amongst themselves prior to our Main Training Camp," stated Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather. "These players are the future of our organization and several will have a chance to compete for positions on the Rangers in the very near future, including the upcoming season."
The camp, which will include daily on-ice double sessions and off-ice training and nutrition, will be overseen by the Rangers coaching staff of Tom Renney, Perry Pearn, Mike Pelino and Benoit Allaire. Also assisting with the camp will be Rangers Special Assistant, Prospect Development and Community Relations Adam Graves, along with Hartford Wolf Pack General Manager and Head Coach Jim Schoenfeld and Hartford Assistant Coaches Ken Gernander and Ulf Samuelsson. The players daily workouts will be at the Training Center from 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM each day, with intrasquad scrimmages included on select days. Some of the other prospects that are currently under contract with the Rangers attending the Rookie Camp are: goaltender Chris Holt; defensemen Ivan Baranka
, Hannu Pikkarainen and Jake Taylor; forwards Dwight Helminen; Ryan Hollweg, Rick Kozak; and Petr Prucha. Several unsigned skaters will also be participating in the work-out sessions, including: defenseman Dylan Reese and forwards Zdenek Bahensky
; Dane Byers; Ryan Callahan
; Brandon Dubinsky
; Bruce Graham; and Jakub Petruzalek, among others. In addition, all but one of the players selected by the Rangers at the 2005 NHL Entry Draft will also be in attendance for the training week. Overall, 42 skaters will be working out at the Madison Square Garden Training Center during the camp.
The Rangers Main Training Camp will begin with players reporting on Sunday, September 11. Physicals and off-ice testing will take place on Monday, September 12 and on-ice workouts begin on Tuesday, September 13.WHO:
