Rangers to Host NHL BREAKOUT 2000 on September 23rd & 24th

by Staff Writer / New York Rangers
NHL BREAKOUT 2000 will come to Rye Playland this Saturday and Sunday, September 23 and 24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event, the largest BREAKOUT in the tour’s six year history, will feature more than 140 local teams of all ages and skill levels, competing in state-of-the-art NHL CoolAir inflatable rinks. The weekend also will feature interactive hockey activities, along with live music and an auction featuring New York Rangers autographed merchandise. Admission is free for all activities, excluding organized tournament play.

In addition to the weekend’s activities, Rangers’ alumni Glenn Anderson and Brian Mullen will be hosting a clinic on Saturday at 11 a.m. for a group of children from TASC - The After-School Corporation. The New York Rangers, in association with Madison Square Garden’s Cheering for Children Foundation, are deeply involved in the TASC initiative, joining forces to impact the lives of some 16,000 middle school-aged children in New York City.

On Sunday at 12:30 p.m., Rangers forward Manny Malhotra, defenseman Jason Doig and Mullen will be on hand to conduct a hockey clinic for boys and girls from the New York chapter of the Inner-City Games. The clinic will involve a chalk talk/hockey 101 lesson followed by street hockey instruction and a brief mini-game. Equipment will be provided for the participants in addition to lunch and prizes. The Inner-City Games aim to provide opportunities for inner-city youth to participate in sports, educational, cultural and community enrichment programs; to build confidence and self-esteem; to encourage youth to say "no" to gangs, drugs and violence.

Since the tour’s inception six years ago, more than 1.5 million people have attended NHL BREAKOUT events. Winners from each of this season’s 22 tour stops, as well as the 2000 European Champion from Stockholm, Sweden, qualify to participate in NHL BREAKOUT The Championships, Jan. 12-14, 2001, in Orlando, Florida.

NHL BREAKOUT 2000 is presented by Dodge, IBM, POWERaDE and Mission Hockey. Supporting partners include Parabolics In-Line Wheels, Sega, MBNA, and Febreeze in North America plus Bell Express Vu in Canada.
