Rangers Statement Regarding the Passing of Herb Brooks

The New York Rangers organization is shocked and deeply saddened by the death of Herb Brooks. He was not only a great friend and colleague in the world of hockey, but more importantly he was a wonderful person who will be missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

HERB BROOKS - August 5, 1937 to August 11, 2003

New York Rangers - Head Coach (1981-1985):
* 131-113-41 career regular season record
* Ranks fifth on Rangers' all-time games coached list (285)
* Ranks fifth on New York's all-time coaching wins list (131)
* Ranks fourth on the Rangers' all-time coaching winning percentage list (.532)
* Reached the 100-win plateau faster than any other coach in Rangers history
* Posted a 12-12 record in 24 career post-season matches with the Blueshirts

Career Notes:
* Member of 1964 and 1968 United States Olympic Hockey teams (served as captain in 1968)
* Captured three NCAA Division I titles (1974, 1976, 1979) as head coach of the University of Minnesota Gophers
* Served as Head Coach of the 1980 United States Olympic Hockey team, capturing the gold medal in Lake Placid, New York
* Inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 1990
* Served as New Jersey Devils head coach during the 1992-93 season
* Coached the Minnesota North Stars during the 1997-98 season
* Coached the French Olympic hockey team at the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan
* Inducted into the International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame in 1999
* Served as Head Coach of the 2002 United States Olympic Hockey team, capturing a silver medal in Salt Lake City, Utah
* Was the recipient of the 2002 Lester Patrick Award, named after former Rangers player, coach and general manager. The award is presented annually to players, coaches, officials and executives who have provided an "outstanding service to hockey in the United States."
