PHOTO: Dwight Helminen tallied his fourth goal of the playoffs as Charlotte took a 2-1 lead in their ECHL American Conference Semifinals series with a 4-1 win over Gwinnett on Wednesday.

Charlotte leads series, 2-1
On the day it was announced that the team would be moving to the new Charlotte Arena, the Checkers gave a nod to their home of over 12 years and beat the Gwinnett Gladiators 4-1 before a crowd of 2,461 at Cricket Arena. Dwight Helminen, David Liffiton, Ryan Cuthbert and Ryan Lang scored for Charlotte, while Alex Westlund turned aside 33 of 34 shots on the night. The win gives the Checkers a 2-1 lead in the American Conference Semifinals that they hope to extend in their second home game of the series on Thursday, April 28th at 7:00 p.m.

OHL SportChek Eastern Conference Championship Series for the Bobby Orr Trophy
Ottawa wins series, 4-0
In Ottawa, Jamie McGinn scored 11:01 into overtime to lift the 67's to a 3-2 win over the Peterborough Petes in the OHL Playoffs on Wednesday. With the win, Ottawa captured the Bobby Orr Trophy as the Eastern Conference champions in four games. Chris Hulit and Brad Bonello also scored and Julian Talbot picked up two assists in the win. 67s forward Jakub Petruzalek collected two penalty minutes in the win and has posted 14 points (seven goals, seven assists) and 28 penalty minutes in 16 post-season games. Ottawa now awaits the winner of the London Knights-Kitchener Rangers series (London leads 3-1) to determine the 2004-05 OHL champion.

Kelowna leads series, 3-1
It took overtime as the Kelowna Rockets skated to a 5-4 win over the Kootenay Ice on Wednesday in Game 4 of the WHL Kal Tire Western Conference Finals. Ice captain Nigel Dawes tallied a goal in the loss, extending his point streak to six games (four goals, six assists). Dawes has now posted two goals and five assists in the four games during this series. Kootenay hosts Game 5 of the series on Friday.

Series tied, 2-2
The Prince Albert Raiders evened its best-of-seven WHL Eastern Conference Finals series by downing the Brandon Wheat Kings, 4-2, in Game 4 on Wednesday. Game 5 is slated for Friday in Brandon. Raiders forward Rick Kozak collected an assist and a whopping 33 penalty minutes in being named the third star of the game on the night. Dane Byers was held off the scoresheet for Prince Albert in the win.
