New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the team has signed free agent defensemen Igor Ulanov and Dave Karpa. Terms of the deals were not disclosed.
Ulanov, 31, appeared in 67 games with the Edmonton Oilers last season, collecting three goals and 20 assists, along with 90 penalty minutes. He also posted a plus-15 rating, tying for first on the club. Ulanov added four penalty minutes in six playoff contests with Edmonton in 2001. The 6-3, 211-pound native of Krasnokamsk, Russia has tallied 18 goals and 105 assists for 123 points, along with 991 penalty minutes in 551 career NHL matches with Winnipeg, Washington, Chicago, Tampa Bay, Montreal and Edmonton.
Ulanov was Winnipeg's eighth choice, 203rd overall, in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft.
Karpa, 30, appeared in 80 contests with the Carolina Hurricanes last season, recording four goals and six assists, along with a team-leading 159 penalty minutes. He also tied for the club lead with 17 penalty minutes in six post-season matches with Carolina. The 6-1, 210-pound native of Regina, Saskatchewan has notched 17 goals and 68 assists for 85 points, along with 1229 penalty minutes in 463 career games with Quebec, Anaheim and Carolina.
Karpa was Quebec's fourth choice, 68th overall, in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft.
