The red-hot Hartford Wolf Pack, the Rangers' American Hockey League affiliate, defeated the Lowell Devils 3-2 on Saturday night in Lowell, Mass., for their franchise-record eighth consecutive road victory. The Pack came back from a 2-1 deficit with two third-period goals for the win. Dwight Helminen, the gam's No. 1 star, got Hartford off to a fast start with an unassisted shorthanded goal just 80 seconds into the game, but Lowell scored the next two goals, with both coming in the middle period. All-Star rookie Ryan Callahan tied the game at 2-2 with his team-leading 25th goal of the season on a power play just 33 seconds into the third period. Fellow Pack All-Star Daniel Girardi assisted on Callahan's goal. Francis Lessard, the No. 3 star, then delivered the game-winner off assists from Dane Byers and Helminen at 11:09 of the third period. Goaltender Stephen Valiquette made 22 saves for Hartford, which outshot the Devils 31-24. The Wolf Pack are now 24-17-3 on the season and have gone a remarkable 19-6-2 over their past 27 games to strengthen their grip on second place in the Eastern Conference's Atlantic Division, just six points behind Manchester. The Charlotte Checkers, the Rangers' East Coast Hockey League affiliate, beat the Reading Royals 3-2 in an overtime shootout on Saturday night in Reading, Pa. Trailing 2-0 in the second period, the Checkers stormed back, thanks to the oustanding play of the Rangers prospects. Bruce Graham, who recently returned from the ECHL All-Star Game, made it a 2-1 game on a power play at 6:21 of the middle period, with Hugh Jessiman picking up the primary assist. The goal was the team-leading 25th of the season for Graham, named the game's No. 3 star. Zdenek Bahensky later tied the score on a goal at 8:30 of the second. The game eventually went to overtime and then to an eight-round shootout, where Rangers goaltending prospect Chris Holt slammed the door on the Royals by stopping seven of eight shots. The Checkers won in the eighth round when Dan Murphy scored, and Holt denied Reading's Malcolm MacMillan. Holt finished the game with 18 saves for the win. The Checkers are now 22-14-3 and tied for third place in the American Conference's South Division -- just five points behind division-leading Gwinnett.
