Rangers Daily Prospect Update: Jan. 12, 2007

The Charlotte Checkers, the Rangers' East Coast Hockey League affiliate, downed the Pensacola Ice Pilots 3-2 at home on Friday night. Rangers prospect Lee Falardeau was the No. 1 star of the game and scored the Checkers' final goal at 5:38 of the second period, giving Charlotte a 3-1 lead at the time. Falardeau led all players in the game with seven shots. Bruce Graham, recently chosen to play in the ECHL All-Star Game, had the second assist on Falardeau's goal. Fellow Rangers prospect Chris Holt was outstanding in goal, stopping 23 shots for the win. The Checkers are now 19-14-3 and in fourth place in the American Conference's South Division. In addition, 17 Rangers prospects competed in regular-season games in the CHL, QMJHL, OHL, WHL, NCAA and Europe on Friday. Here is a summary of their performances:

Kveton David Kveton

Kveton's Scoring to Date: 7 games, 1 goal, 8 assists, 2 PIM

It was a night to remember for Kveton, the No. 1 star who recently returned to Gatineau from the Czech Republic. Kveton had the second assist on Martin Frechette's power play goal at 14:02 of the second period, pulling Gatineau into a 1-1 tie. He later scored his first major-junior goal on a power-play at 6:24 of the third, putting Gatineau up 3-1. He closed out his big night with two assists. He had the primary assist on Kevin Petit's game-winner at 11:45 of the third period, making it a 4-1 game and then picked up a second assist on Frechette's goal at 16:07 of the third period.

StaalMarc Staal

Staal played a major role in the Wolves' rout of St. Mike's at home, picking up two points. He began his big night with the primary assist on Adam McQuaid's power play goal at 7:13 of the first period, tying the score at 1-1. He then had another primary assist on McQuaid's second power-play goal of the evening, scored at 14:46 of the second period to put Sudbury up 4-1. Staal finished the night with a plus-1 rating.

Marek's Scoring to Date: 34 games, 17 goals, 20 assists, 42 PIM

Marek had a big game for Magnitogorsk, picking up a goal and two assists in his team's overtime win. He began with the primary assist on Vitaly Atyushov's shorthanded goal at 16:03 of the second period, pulling Magnitogorsk into a 2-2 tie. He followed that up with his 17th goal of the season to tie the game at 3-3 with only 19 seconds remaining. Marek then had the lone assist on the game-winner, scored by Nikolai Kulemin at 2:29 of OT. He finished the game with a plus-1 rating.

KozakRick Kozak

Kozak's Scoring to Date: 18 games, 14 goals, 5 assists, 59 PIM
Jan. 11: Memphis 5, Colorado 4 (at Loveland, Colo.)

Kozak picked up two points in the RiverKings' win. He began by scoring a power-play goal to make it 1-0 at 8:59 of the opening period and finished with the primary assist on Ryan Campbell's goal at 5:01 of the third period, putting Memphis up 5-1 at the time. Kozak also took one minor penalty in the game.

It was a two-assist night for Roche. He had the primary assist on Brian Strait's goal at 19:16 of the first period, giving the Terriers a 2-1 lead. He later had another primary assist on Bryan Ewing's game-winning goal at 1:27 of the third period.

In his first game back with Saginaw after winning a gold medal at the World Junior Championships, Pyatt picked up the second assist on Cody Bass' power-play goal at 14:58 of the first period, cutting Plymouth's lead to 2-1. Plymouth broke the game open with a run of five straight goals, outscoring Saginaw 4-0 in the middle period.

Zeliska had the second assist on Matt Robertson's goal at 13:06 of the second period, putting the Raiders up 3-1. He also took a pair of minor penalties in the game and finished with a plus-1 rating.
