Rangers Agree to Terms with Free Agent Defenseman Raphael Diaz

NEW YORK, July 1, 2015 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the team has agreed to terms with free agent defenseman Raphael Diaz.

Diaz, 29, skated in 56 games with the Calgary Flames this past season, registering two goals and two assists for four points, along with 10 penalty minutes. Calgary posted a 4-0-0 record when he notched a point in 2014-15. Diaz tallied his second career NHL game-winning goal on February 2 vs. Winnipeg, and he recorded a goal while skating in his 200th career NHL game on March 30 at Dallas. In addition, Diaz skated in three playoff games with Calgary this past season.

Prior to joining the Flames, Diaz played part of the 2013-14 season with the Rangers after being acquired in a trade with Vancouver on March 5, 2014. He skated in 11 regular season games with the Blueshirts, registering one goal and one assist for two points, along with a plus-five rating and four penalty minutes. Diaz also appeared in four playoff games with the Rangers and helped the team advance to the Stanley Cup Final.

The 5-11, 197-pounder has skated in 201 career NHL games over four seasons with the Rangers, Montreal, Vancouver, and Calgary, registering eight goals and 41 assists for 49 points, along with 62 penalty minutes. Diaz made his NHL debut with the Canadiens on October 6, 2011 at Toronto and notched his first career NHL point with an assist on October 15, 2011 vs. Colorado. Diaz has also skated in 12 career NHL playoff games with the Rangers, Montreal, and Calgary, and he has reached the playoffs in each of the last three seasons.

Internationally, the Baar, Switzerland native has represented his country in several tournaments. Most recently, Diaz skated in four games while representing Switzerland at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. He also represented Switzerland at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia, and he helped Switzerland capture a silver medal at the 2013 IIHF World Championship.

Diaz was originally signed by Montreal as a free agent on May 13, 2011.
