New York Rangers President and General Manager Neil Smith announced today that the club has acquired defenseman Kevin Hatcher from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for defenseman Peter Popovic. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Hatcher, 33, notched 11 goals and 27 assists for 38 points, along with 24 penalty minutes in 66 contests with Pittsburgh last season. He also collected two goals and three assists for five points, along with four penalty minutes in 13 post-season matches in 1998-99.
The 6-3, 230-pound defenseman has skated in 1026 National Hockey League contests with the Washington Capitals, Dallas Stars and Penguins, notching 219 goals and 417 assists for 636 points, along with 1316 penalty minutes. He has also tallied 22 goals and 37 assists for 59 points, along with 246 penalty minutes in 112 career playoff matches. Hatcher has never appeared in a minor league contest.
The 14-year NHL veteran has been selected to five NHL All-Star Games (1990, 1991, 1992, 1996, 1997) and has represented the United States at the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan, collecting two assists in three contests.
The native of Detroit, Michigan was originally drafted as Washington's first choice, 17th overall, in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft.
