by Staff Writer / New York Rangers

Rangers prospect Ethan Werek, a second-round pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, was named the Ontario Hockey League Player of the Week on Monday. Werek, a center who led the league with seven points from Sept. 9-15, helped the Kingston Frontenacs win three straight games over Brampton, Belleville and Sarnia

Werek's remarkable three-game run included three goals and four assists. His plus-minus rating of plus-5 was also tied for a league-high over the course of the week, and he was named the game's No. 1 star in both Thursday night's 5-1 road win at Brampton and Friday night's 4-1 home win over Belleville.

He scored two goals -- including the insurance tally at 17:46 of the second period -- and added an assist in the win over the Brampton Battalion.  He then scored one goal with two assists setting up the third-period game winner at the 0:46 mark to beat the Belleville Bulls.  He finished the week with a first-period assist in a 4-3 win over the Sarnia Sting on Sunday.

Werek, 18, is in his second OHL season with the Frontenacs.  In 20 games this season he has scored 13 goals and 11 assists for 24 points and will compete for Team OHL in the 2009 SUBWAY Super Series game on Thursday night in Barrie.
