NYR Players/Prospects at World tourney: May 17 Recap

Rangers players Michael Nylander and Marcel Hossa competed at the 2006 World Championship tournament in Riga, Latvia on Wednesday. Here is a look at their performances:

Nylander picked up two assists as the Swedes crushed Team USA 6-0 to earn a berth in the Saturday's semifinals against Canada. Sweden cruised to a 2-0 lead in the first period and never looked back. Nylander had the lone assist on former Ranger Mikael Samuelsson's goal at 5:51 of the second period, putting the Swedes up 3-0. He later had the primary assist on a goal by Kenny Jonsson at 15:34 of the second, making it 4-0. Mika Hannula led Sweden with a hat trick, and former Rangers goaltender Johan Holmqvist made 18 saves for the shutout.

Team Standing: Elminated in quarterfinals

May 17: Canada 4, Slovakia 1 (at Arena Riga)

Hossa did not record a point as Slovakia fell to Canada in the quarterfinals. The Slovaks took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Dusan Milo, but Canada scored to tie it in the second and then ran away with the game in the third, scoring three times. Mike Cammalieri, Patrice Bergeron, Sidney Crosby and Jeff Carter scored for Team Canada.
