New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has traded forward Ville Nieminen to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for San Jose's third-round pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
Nieminen, 28, has appeared in 48 games with the Rangers this season, registering five goals and 12 assists, along with 53 penalty minutes. In eight games at the 2006 Winter Olympics, he registered one assist along with eight penalty minutes, helping Finland capture a silver medal.
A veteran of six NHL seasons with the New York Rangers, Colorado Avalanche, Pittsburgh Penguins, Chicago Blackhawks and Calgary Flames, Nieminen has skated in 319 career NHL games, registering 44 goals and 64 assists for 108 points, along with 280 penalty minutes.
The 6-1, 211-pounder has also appeared in 47 career playoff contests with Colorado and Calgary, registering eight goals and ten assists for 18 points, along with 75 penalty minutes.
Nieminen was originally Colorado's fourth choice, 78th overall, in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft.
