New MSG show looks back at Messier`s career

by Staff Writer / New York Rangers

MSG Network will air a new program tonight at 6:30 p.m. ET that looks back at the career of Rangers legend Mark Messier.

The show, Rangers # 11 -- Mark Messier is part of MSG's new biography series, which launched on Wednesday with a show about New York Knicks great Willis Reed.

The purpose of the series is to celebrate the lives and careers of beloved New York sports figures. The show draws from pivotal moments in their careers that lifted them from ordinary athletes to legendary performers. These superstars' stories are brought to life through interviews with teammates, sports writers, historians and the athletes themselves. Photographs and archival game footage play a key role in each show.

Tonight's Rangers #11 - Mark Messier recalls the day in 1991 that Messier came to the Blueshirts from the Edmonton Oilers, already a major NHL star at the time. The show examines how Messier took his career up a notch once he arrived in New York and how the greatest chapter of his career occurred after he had already won the Stanley Cup five times.

This 30-minute biography on the renowned "power forward," chronicles Messier's finest moments on and off the ice, including the famous 'guarantee' he made prior to Game 6 of the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals. At that time, Messier promised that the Rangers would avoid playoff elimination and force a Game 7 at Madison Square Garden. The Rangers went out and made that happen, with a little help from The Captain whose hat trick sealed the deal.

Messier's personal reflections on his career and thoughts from those closest to him and the game tell the story of this tremendous leader. The show premieres at 6:30 p.m. ET tonight on MSG. Re-broadcasts can be seen on Nov. 26 at 12:30 a.m. and Nov. 27 at 4:30 p.m.

Future installments of MSG's new biography series will feature other Rangers legends. Shows on Messier's 1994 Cup-winning teammates Brian Leetch and Mike Richter are in the works for the next two months.
