The American Hockey League announced today that Hartford Wolf Pack defenseman Mike Mottau has been named the Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week for the period ending December 10, 2000.

In three games last week, Mottau (MAH-toh) had one goal, three assists, and a plus-5 rating to help Hartford break out of a five-game winless slide. Mottau had a goal and an assist in Wednesday night’s 5-1 victory over Portland, the Wolf Pack’s first victory since November 19. On Friday, he was a plus-2 and recorded an assist in a 4-2 loss to Quebec. And Saturday, Mottau assisted on the game-tying goal with 1:22 left in regulation as Hartford rallied for a 3-2 overtime victory at Springfield.

In recognition of his accomplishment, Mottau will receive a Sher-Wood leather jacket during an on-ice ceremony prior to an upcoming home game, and Sher-Wood will donate five travel bags to the Middlesex Youth Hockey organization in Mottau’s name.

Mottau, 22, is in his first professional season after a magnificent four-year career at Boston College, where he helped the Eagles to three Frozen Four appearances and two trips to the NCAA championship game. The native of Quincy, Massachusetts, is the all-time Hockey East Conference leader in assists and points by a defenseman, the all-time assist leader at BC, and a two-time winner of the Walter Brown Award as New England’s top U.S.-born college hockey player. Last year, Mottau became the third defenseman in history to win the Hobey Baker Award as the outstanding college hockey player in the nation.

Mottau has had a great start to his rookie season, leading all first-year blueliners in scoring with 16 points (three goals, 13 assists) in 21 AHL games. He has also been a key component of the Wolf Pack’s power play unit, which ranks second in the AHL (23.2% efficiency). A seventh-round draft pick by the Rangers in 1997, Mottau also has one assist in eight games with the Rangers this season.

Mottau is the fifth member of the Wolf Pack to be named Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week since Hartford entered the league in 1997-98, joining Dan Cloutier (week ending 11/9/97), Marc Savard (11/23/97), Derek Armstrong (1/31/99), and Alexandre Daigle (10/17/99).

As Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week, Mottau is scheduled to participate in a live chat on on Wednesday evening, December 13, at 7:00 p.m.
