Mark Messier Joins Elite 1,600 Club

New York Rangers captain Mark Messier skated in his 1,600th career NHL match tonight in the the Rangers' 2-1 win over the Atlanta Thrashers, becoming just the fourth player in NHL history to reach the plateau (Gordie Howe - 1,767, Larry Murphy - 1,615, Raymond Bourque - 1,612). Earlier this season, he became just the third player in NHL history to register 1,800 points in his NHL career, tallying a goal and an assist in the Rangers 4-2 win on December 15 vs. Buffalo.

Messier has tallied 658 goals and 1,146 assists for 1,804 points, along with 1,942 penalty minutes in 1,600 career NHL matches with Edmonton, Vancouver and the Rangers. The captain trails only former Ranger Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe on the all-time scoring list and stands in the top eight of each of the major scoring categories in NHL history.
