by Staff Writer / New York Rangers

On Saturday February 16th, the Rangers kicked off the annual winter hockey celebration Hockey Weekend in New York with a Try Hockey for Free Clinic at the Training Center featuring Rangers alumni Dan Blackburn and Adam Graves. The clinic featured beginner skating and introductory hockey lessons for first time skaters. The event was capped off with an autograph session with Blackburn and Graves, and each participant left the Training Center with their own souvenir hockey stick.

Hockey Weekend in New York was preceded by the announcement of the Rangers new youth hockey platform – “Go Skate! Playing is the Goal” – which will focus on improving the youth hockey experience in the tri-state area by increasing opportunities and accessibility to the sport through hockey camps, clinics and free skating events. “Go Skate!” expects to reach more than 15,000 youth through Future Rangers (introductory hockey, ages 3-10), Youth Street Hockey (introductory hockey, ages 7-14), Pee Wee Rangers (elite level, ages 11-12), Camps and more.

Rangers captain Ryan Callahan is the spokesperson for the new initiative and can be seen in a PSA which introduces the program. “I am proud to now be involved in the Rangers ‘Go Skate’ initiative,” said Callahan. “It’s great to be a part of an organization that realizes the importance of making these same types of programs available to youth and has a dedication to helping grow the game of hockey.”

The events featured that weekend continued with a full day of complimentary skating and free learn to play hockey lessons in Central Park at Wollman Rink on Sunday, February 17th. The weekend would wrap with free public skates with alumni appearances in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, and conclude with a Future Rangers clinic at Danbury arena on Monday, February 18th. Alumni Glenn Anderson, Dan Blackburn, Ron Duguay, Nick Fotiu, Adam Graves, Ron Greschner, and Brian Mullen all participated in growing the game through the clinic and skating sessions held at Hockey Weekend in New York successfully launching the “Go Skate!” platform.

Hockey Weekend in New York was a series of special events and complimentary hockey programs through New York in support of USA Hockey’s annual “Hockey Weekend Across America.” For more information on “Go Skate!” please visit the youth hockey section of the Rangers website,
