by Staff Writer / New York Rangers

Steve Rucchin continued the Rangers' celebration following the historic raising of Mark Messier's number with a goal at 7:44 in the first period to give the Blueshirts a 1-0 lead over the Edmonds Oilers through one period of play. New Ranger Petr Sykora and Michael Nylander assisted on Rucchin's goal. The Rangers had the goal advantage despite being outshot 10-6.

Edmonton's special teams lit up the first half of second period with a pair of power-play goals and one shorthanded to give the Oilers a 3-1 lead at the 10:47 mark. But the Rangers rallied behind goals by Fedor Tyutin and Petr Sykora within 2:04 to tie the game at 3-3 heading into the final period of play.

The Rangers will open the third period on a power play for 1:51, their eighth man advantage on the night.
