5th-Anniversary Season Highlighted by New Opponents, Earlier Starts
Hartford Wolf Pack General Manager Al Coates announced today that the club will begin its fifth year in the American Hockey League on Saturday, October 6, at the Pepsi Arena against the Albany River Rats. Their home opener is Saturday, October 13, against the expansion Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
For the 2001-02 season, the Wolf Pack have moved the start times of weekend games at the Civic Center ahead 30 minutes, with all home games Monday through Saturday facing off at 7:05 p.m. Five of Hartford’s six Sunday games have also been moved up, by one hour to 4:05 p.m.
“We’re excited to have a fan-friendly schedule again this season,” said Coates. “Between the earlier start times and the increased number of weekend dates, we’re continuing to provide a source of premier entertainment in the Hartford area.”
The 2001-02 home schedule once again features a heavy concentration of weekend dates, with 31 of the Pack’s 40 home dates scheduled for Friday (seven), Saturday (18), or Sunday (six). Mid-week games include contests during school vacations in November, December, and February.
The American Hockey League is at an all-time high of 27 member teams for its 66th season, with all 30 NHL franchises developing their top prospects in the AHL. Hartford will play in a five-team East Division, along with Albany, Bridgeport, Providence, and Springfield. The Wolf Pack will face their division rivals a total of 36 times.
The budding rivalry between the Wolf Pack and their expansion neighbors from Bridgeport begins with a home-and-home series on October 12 and 13. The teams will battle 10 times during the regular season.
Highlights of the home schedule include the return to the Civic Center of teams from former WHA stopovers Houston (Nov. 7, 10), Chicago (Feb. 20), and Manitoba (Mar. 29-30). Hartford’s longest homestand is four games from Feb. 27 to Mar. 6; their longest road trip is scheduled for six games from Feb. 1-10.
The 2002 AHL All-Star Classic will be held February 12-13 at the brand-new Mile One Stadium in St. John’s, Nfld.
