'Dream Week' a thrill for youngsters

by Staff Writer / New York Rangers

For the second consecutive summer, the Garden of Dreams Foundation hosted “Dream Week”; a week-long summer adventure for children from one of the Foundation’s 21 charity partner organizations.

This year, 40 youth from WHEDCo were chosen to participate in activities arranged for them by the New York Rangers, Knicks, and Liberty, MSG Sports Properties, MSG Entertainment and Fuse.

Rangers legend Rod Gilbert talks to youngsters on the grounds of the MSG Training Center during the July 6-11 Garden of Dreams "Dream Week" event.
The week began on Tuesday, July 6 with the Rangers. Children were welcomed to the Madison Square Garden Training Center by Rangers Legend, Rod Gilbert, who then joined the youngsters for an ice skating party on the Rangers practice ice.

“This is a special week for these kids,” Gilbert stated. “And I’m honored to be able to kick things off here today for the Rangers.”

Before taking the ice, each child received a personalized Rangers jersey. Following the skating party, children enjoyed lunch and afternoon activities including the Rangers Road Tour and a behind-the-scenes tour of the Madison Square Garden Training Center. Children also had the opportunity to visit the Rangers locker room and participate in an equipment dress up where they were outfitted in actual Rangers player equipment!

Dream Week continued on Wednesday, July 7, as the kids traveled to Manhattan for a professional boxing seminar in the morning at the David Barton Gym and an afternoon with the Radio City Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall. On Thursday, the children returned to the MSG Training Center to spend an afternoon with the New York Knicks and Liberty.

On Friday, July 9, the kids met at the MSG Training Center for a special culminating party and summer BBQ alongside Garden celebrities, including Rangers’ Legend Adam Graves.  There was an award ceremony that day with each child receiving a special award to commemorate Dream Week. Later in the evening, the group of children attended the Lady Gaga concert at The Garden and had an opportunity to walk the red carpet at a “Pre-Party” with games, mingling and dancing.

Dream Week concluded on Sunday, July 11, when the Dream Week team visited Madison Square Garden to see the New York Liberty defeat the Chicago Sky, 57-54.
