After being claimed off waivers by the Rangers on January 16, 2002, forward Trent Whitfield has returned to the Washington Capitals organization, as the Caps claimed him back off waivers today.
Whitfield, 24, has appeared in 25 matches with Washington and the Rangers this season, registering one assist , along with 28 penalty minutes. He has also skated in 10 matches with the Portland Pirates (AHL), tallying four goals and four assists for eight points, along with eight penalty minutes.
After signing with Washington as a free agent on September 1, 1998, he has skated in 86 career NHL contests, registering two goals and five assists for seven points, along with 63 penalty minutes. He also skated in three playoff matches in during the 1999-2000 season.
The native of Estevan, Saskatchewan was originally the Boston Bruins' fourth round choice, 100th overall, in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.
