by Staff Writer / New York Rangers

Rangers alternate captain Ryan Callahan, last year's winner of the team's Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award, is in the running for another honor this season -- the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award, presented by Bridgestone.

Callahan is among this week's three finalists to enter a group that will be considered for the award. Messier, who now serves as Special Assistant to Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather, will select the award's winner at the conclusion of the regular season.

Suggestions for nominees are solicited from fans, clubs and NHL personnel, but the selection of the three finalists and the ultimate winner is made by Messier himself.

Blueshirts fans can help ensure that Callahan is among those Messier will consider by voting him as the Week 5 winner. His competition this week includes New Jersey Devils captain Jamie Langenbrunner and Colorado Avalanche captain Adam Foote. Voting runs from now until April 4.

The Week 5 winner will join Buffalo's Ryan Miller, Detroit's Nicklas Lidstrom, Philadelphia's Mike Richards and Washington's Alex Ovechkin as finalists for this year's award.

Beginning on Monday, April 5, the five weekly winners will be pitted against each other in the final reader poll.

Previous winners of the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award presented by Bridgestone are Chris Chelios of Detroit (2006-07), Mats Sundin of Toronto (2007-08) and Jarome Iginla of Calgary (2008-09).
