The second biggest piece of positive news for the Rangers on Thursday---trailing only the fact that Derek Stepan had agreed to terms on a new contract---was that team captain Ryan Callahan has been cleared by doctors to take part in contact, the final step to returning to game action following off-season shoulder surgery.
However when asked if Callahan would be able to play in next Thursday's season opener in Phoenix, head coach Alain Vigneault replied quickly and without hesitation, "No!".
Still the news that Callahan is in the final stage of his rehab from the June surgery is well received by the Rangers.
"Cally took contact this morning at practice, has been cleared for contact, and that's the final step in coming back," Vigneault said following Thursday's 5-0 loss in Vancouver.
Carl Hagelin, who also underwent off-season shoulder surgery, is a bit behind Callahan in terms of his rehab.
