Bure Reacts to Blueshirt Blockbuster

by Staff Writer / New York Rangers

Pavel Bure was formally introduced to the New York media on Tuesday prior to the Rangers-Canucks game at Madison Square Garden. MSG Chairman and Cablevision President and Ceo James Dolan joined Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather and Head Coach Ron Low in welcoming the Russian Rocket's to Broadway.

Bure met the media briefly and had this to say of Monday's trade to the Rangers:

Q: How does it feel to be a Ranger?

Pavel Bure: "I'm so excited to be a Ranger right now - probably as excited as I was when I entered the NHL 11 years ago with Vancouver when (then GM/coach) Pat Quinn put a jersey on me. It was my dream for such a long time to be part of the Rangers. It'slike a dream come true."

Q: What can you do to help the team make the playoffs this season?

Pavel Bure: " I am going to try to help the team in any way possible. I just want to do good for the team. It's a team game. One guy can't do it all. We have 20 guys here who have to pull it together."

Q: On his time spent in Florida ...

Pavel Bure: "I had a good time in Florida. It's a good organization with great fans. But I'm definitely happy to be with the Rangers today."

Q: On his long desire to play in New York ...

Pavel Bure: "I thought about it ever since the first time I played in Madison Square Garden back in 1992. We played in the Cup Finals here in 1994. New York is New York - the capital of the world. It's great to finally get a chance to play here."

Q: Have you given any thought to the fact that your first game as a Ranger will be against your original team - the Vancouver Canucks?

Pavel Bure: "It was a long time ago that I played in Vancouver. I have a lot of good memories from my time there. This will be very special to play my first game as a Ranger."

Q: Do you view this as a new start for you at this stage of your career?

Pavel Bure: It's definitely a fresh start. I've been in the league 11 years and I have two goals - I want to win the Stanley Cup and I want to score 500 goals. The Rangers are a team that is focused on winning the Stanley Cup."

Q: On chosing jersey #9 ...

Pavel Bure: Well, (Maurice) Rocket Richard wore number nine and it was available. I won his trophy twice (awarded to the NHL's goal-scoring leader), so I think it's a good omen."
