Western Conference Playoff Picture

by Staff Writer / Nashville Predators
With less than one week left in the NHL's regular season schedule, NashvillePredators.com will continue its in-depth look at the playoff race in the Western Conference. Check back for information on games of interest in the Conference playoff race.

DEFINING THE RACE:
NashvillePredators.com will track the teams still alive for the final two Western Conference playoff spots. Categories listed will be the team's current playoff seed, points earned, wins (which is the first tie breaker at the end of the season), games remaining in the schedule, and the maximum points still available.

Seed Team Points (Wins) Gms Remain Max Pts
#7 Anaheim 88 (41) 2 92
#8 St. Louis 88 (39) 2 92
#9 NASHVILLE 88 (40) 1 90
#10 Minnesota 85 (38) 2 89

Notes: Detroit and San Jose have clinched no worse than the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference ... Calgary, Chicago, Columbus, and Vancouver have also clinched playoff spots ... Anaheim has a magic number of 3 points to clinch a playoff spot (or 2 points with one win to secure the tie-breaker) ... St. Louis has a magic number of 3 points to clinch a playoff spot ... Western Conference teams eliminated from playoff contention: Colorado, Dallas, Edmonton, Los Angeles, and Phoenix.

Remaining Opponents
Anaheim (1H/1A) - Dallas, Phoenix
Minnesota (1H/1A) - Columbus, Nashville
Nashville (1A) - Minnesota
St. Louis (1H/1A) - Colorado, Columbus

NHL Tie Breakers
If two teams are tied at the end of the regular season, the NHL tie-breaker system goes as follows:
1) Greater number of games won during the entire season
2) Greater number points earned in the season series between the tied clubs
3) The greater differential between goals for and goals against for the entire regular season.

Nashville Tie Breaker Scenarios
vs. Anaheim - Anaheim leads Tie breaker #1 Wins (41 to 40), Nashville won tie breaker #2 Season Series (6 points to 5).
vs. Minnesota - Nashville leads Tie breaker #1 Wins (40 to 38), Nashville leads tie breaker #2 Season Series (4 points to 2 -- one series meeting remaining), Minnesota leads tied breaker #3 Goal Differential ("+12" to "-16")
vs. St. Louis - Nashville leads Tie breaker #1 Wins (40 to 39), St. Louis won tie breaker #2 Season Series (10 points to 6)
