A couple minutes after assisting on Roman Josi’s power-play goal - his seventh point in his fifth game with his new team - Nashville Predators forward Ryan Johansen looked up at the megatron and saw he was being serenaded.
A split-screen shot of Johansen and Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” music video appropriately played, as the center, acquired via trade 10 days earlier, couldn’t help but crack a smile. When the camera still wouldn’t pan away, Johansen started to nod along to the strains of the classic 1980s love song - much to the delight of the 17,300 present at Bridgestone Arena that evening.
Safe to say it was the first time the 23-year-old has been “Rickrolled” during his home debut for an NHL team, or the first time Paul Gaustad has laughed that hard during a TV timeout.
“I didn’t know what to do,” Johansen said with a laugh. “I was in a tough spot there. I kind of regretted smiling after it because [the Wild] came down there and almost scored. It was pretty funny.”
