TN represented at USA Hockey Nationals Development Programs
This summer 6 Tennessee amateur hockey players from the Southeast District have been selected to attend USA Hockey summer development camps. USA Hockey provides National Camp opportunities for U.S. players that are the best of the best. To participate in these camps, the players are identified locally, go through an evaluation process and if selected move on to the district tryouts. Those players who are selected at the district level then have the privilege of attending one of the USA Hockey summer development camps at the national level. USA Hockey Select 17 Festival National Hockey Center, St. Cloud, MN (July 7- 13, 2008) The purpose of the Select 17 Festival is to showcase the best talent in the country in a high profile developmental/tournament situation. Many scouts from Division I & III colleges, as well as Junior A, B and C teams from around the country attend the Festivals to see and evaluate the best players in the country. Some of these players are also evaluated and selected to participate on the USA Hockey National Teams in International Competition.
Wes Elrod Age: 16 School: Ravenwood High School League/team affiliated: Southern Flyers Fury U16 AAA and Ravenwood Raptors of the GNASH High School League Hockey accomplishments: Fury U16AA Team Captain (‘07-‘08) and GNASH All-Star (‘06-’07, ‘07-‘08) On making the National Development Camp: It’s an accomplishment for any player coming up but for Elrod it really hit home, “Being selected is a dream come true for me and I feel that a window of opportunity has finally opened”. His advice for young players: “Always work hard, keep your grades up, and show the world your dedication no matter where you’re from,” said Elrod who has shown that someone playing in the south can show the talent and dedication to make their dreams come true.
USA Hockey Select 14 Player Development Camp ESL Sports Centre, Rochester, NY (July 12 - 18, 2008) The purpose of the Select 14 Player Development Camp is to showcase the best talent in the country in a high profile developmental situation. Many scouts from Division I & III colleges, as well as Junior A, B and C teams from around the country attend the Festivals to see and evaluate the best players in the country.
Nicholas Covino Age: 14 School: Webb High School, Knoxville League/team affiliated: Knoxville Amateur Hockey Association and TPH Thunder AAA Bantam On making the National Development Camp: “It is an honor to be selected to the National Player Development Camp and to represent the Southeastern District, Thunder AAA hockey and KAHA (Knoxville Amateur Hockey Association)”. His advice for young players: “My advice to young players is to take advantage of every second you have on the ice, listen to your coaches, and always work as hard as possible”.
Sebastian “Sebi” Lemm Age: 14 School: St. Edward High School League/team affiliated: TPH Thunder ‘94 AAA (’07-’08) and Shattuck St. Mary’s hockey club, Minnesota (’08-’09) On making the National Development Camp: “This is a great experience for me and makes me want to work harder to be the best I can be.” His advice for young players: “Always work hard and you will be rewarded. Work hard not only to be the best player you can be but a better individual and teammate. Good hockey players are good all around players and that takes hard work and dedication.”
USA Hockey Select 14 Player Development Tournament – 1994 Birth year USA Hockey Select 15 Player Development Tournament - 1993 Birth Year Kent State University, Kent, Ohio (July 24 - 27, 2008) As part of the selection process for USA Hockey National Development programs, the Southeast District will also participate in a multi-District tournament with the Atlantic, Mid-America and Massachusetts Districts at the Select 14 & Select 15 age divisions. The purpose of the SE District Development Tournament is to showcase the best of the southeast in high level development situations.
Derek Lyle Age: 13 School: Paige Middle School, Franklin League/team affiliated: TPH Thunder ’94 AAA team On making the National Development Camp: As a second year veteran to the program, making the tournament means a lot to Lyle, who with 4 broken bones, shows that he can make the cut no matter what region you are in or injuries he has faced. His advice for young players: “You never know who is watching, so always make sure to play to your full potential.”
Hunter Wilhoite Age: 14 School: Brentwood High School League/team affiliated: TPH Thunder ’94 AAA team and Brentwood Bruins of GNASH High School League Hockey accomplishments: Team South (’03-’04); SE District Select 13 Festival (’06-’07) On making the National Development Camp: “I looking forward to meeting and playing with some of the best players in the country”. His advice for young players: Hard work pays off!
Jaepil “Eric” Yoon Age: 14 School: Phillips Andover Academy League/team affiliated: TPH Thunder AAA Hockey Club (’06-’07) and Phillips Andover Varsity team (’07-’08) On making the National Development Camp: It is a great honor and has given him the chance to show how hard work has made him the player he is today. “I will cherish this memory and moment forever.” His advice for young players: Dedicate yourself to hockey and academics.
