The Preds take to the road tonight for the first time during the 2010 Preseason Schedule with a trip to Raleigh, NC to rematch the Carolina Hurricanes (6 pm CT start). Follow all the action here on our in-game blog.
8:16 pm CT
Lindback with a pad save on the final shot from the left wing boards. Preds win 2-1! In-arena Suter given the Second Star of the Game; Tootoo given the First Star of the Game.
Nashville out-shot Carolina 27-22, which was a pretty close representation of the flow of the game tonight. Tootoo led the way with five shots on goal; Suter next with four shots on goal.
Much like last night, the second period was the difference in the game; Preds skated very well in the middle period -- first and third periods were pretty even.8:15 pm CT
Nashville will have to kill off one more penalty. With 10.8 seconds left, Ward called for high sticking. Ward-Legwand-Thuresson had done a real good job the last minute of play keeping the puck deep in the Carolina zone.8:13 pm CT
BIG save by Lindback with 2:03 left in the third. Quick left pad stop to deny a shot from the middle slot below faceoff dot high. Probably the most impressive save of the night by any of the three goaltenders (both Preds goalies and Pogge for Carolina).8:06 pm CT
3:41 left in the third. Last media timeout. Preds up 2-1. Looking at the stats, Nashville leads 35-17 in hits, which is all the more impressive considering the Preds dominated puck possession in the second period (first and third period were pretty even puck possession); fewer opportunities for hits, but taking advantage of the chances. Bouillon (seven hits) and Johnson (six hits) leading the way for Nashville.
Preds also doing a good job in the faceoff circle, winning 60% of the draws. Smithson has won 8-of-11 so far (73%).8:04 pm CT
Another good PK by the Preds. Ward and O'Reilly had a nice shift; Johnson broke up a couple of passes and had a pair of rink-long clears.8:01 pm CT
Carolina heads back to the power-play. Smithson in the box for tripping with 7:04 left in regulation.7:59 pm CT
7:50 left in the third period. Still 2-1 Preds. Shots on goal pretty even this period (6-5 Carolina edge).7:52 pm CT
Looks like the Preds have juggled some lines here in the third period. Thuresson getting shifts with Legwand and Ward. O'Reilly out there with Flynn and Andersson. Lundmark center Wilson and Erat. The Tootoo-Smithson-Halischuk line seems to be the only one still together.7:46 pm CT
AGood PK by the Preds. Legwand/Ward were excellent midway through the kill and Thuresson/Erat finished it off strong. Legwand and Ward kept possession of the puck in the Canes end for most of their shift and had a couple of shorthanded opportunities.7:42 pm CT
And a old fashioned line-scrum just 1:13 into the third period. Jussi Jokinen was hit hard in the neutral zone. Bouillon called for kneeing; set off a "meeting of the gloves."7:39 pm CT
Getting ready to drop the puck to start the third period.7:23 pm CT
And we enter the second intermission. 2-1 Preds after 40:00 of play. Good second period by Nashville -- out-shot Carolina 11-6 in the frame and now hold a 16-12 edge for the game.
The pairing of Johnson-Laakso both +2 through two periods tonight. Johnson with four blocked shots and five hits. Bouillon leads the game with six hits. As a team the Preds hold a 25-12 advantage in hits. Johnson-Laasko had a rough first few shifts, but have to give them a lot of credit for settling in well.7:19 pm CT
3:16 left in the second. Lindback gets his first test of the night and makes the glove stop on Jeff Skinner. Not an overly tough save, but the play has pretty much been in the other end of the ice since he entered the game.
By the way, Tootoo-Smithson-Halischuk are having a very solid period. Creating offensive chances on most of their shifts; bringing good energy and good speed.7:18 pm CT
Big glove save by Pogge to rob Suter's blast from the left wing. Still 2-1 Preds, late second period.7:09 pm CT
Preds take the lead with 7:54 remaining in the middle period! The game is looking like a carbon copy of last night.
Laakso with a nice step-up in the neutral zone to defuse a two-on-two breakout by the Canes. Halischuk raced in down the right wing boards on the re-group to create a three-on-two for the Preds. Halischuk carried the play to faceoff dot high and dropped the pass Tootoo trailing the play. Tootoo ripped a slapper past Pogge high for the 2-1 Nashville lead.
Nashville has definitely held the better of the play in the middle frame; the last 10 minutes or so of game action has been heavily in Carolina end. Shots are 9-1 Nashville in the second and the Hurricanes have rarely held posession of the puck inside the Preds blueline this period.7:02 pm CT
10:49 left in the second period. Nashville's going to the power-play. Sanguinetti off for holding.
The Preds are using the break as a chance to make a goalie change. Anders Lindback
in for his first action of the preseason. Dekanich had a good showing, stopping six of the seven shots he faced; not a lot of action, but looked comfortable in his positioning. The lone goal against came on a five-on-three for Carolina.7:02 pm CT
And on the continuation of their shift, Legwand nearly assists on another goal. Nice pass back to Bouillon trailing the play; Bouillon's shot went just wide (and Andersson just missed the deflection). Preds hold an 8-1 lead in shots on goal this period.7:01 pm CT
And we're tied at 1-1! David Legwand
with the wrap-around.7:00 pm CT
Preds are starting to pick up the pace on offense. Forwards are working the defensemen into the chances; d-men are being smart in picking their chances to join. Sutter had a nice rush. Momentum starting to turn in Nashville's favor.6:57 pm CT
Wow! Almost tied the score there. Pogge mishandled the puck behind the net. Led to a great chance by Legwand, a follow-up by Bouillon, and then a couple whacks at the loose puck in a scrum at the top of the goal crease.6:56 pm CT
Around four minutes gone in the second period. Preds have the only shot on goal this period; most of the play has been in the neutral zone.6:51 pm CT
Getting ready to drop the puck on the start of the second period.6:34 pm CT
And the first period comes to an end, 1-0 Carolina; a quiet period, only 11 shots taken by the two teams combined and very few big hits.
Of note, Ryan Suter
, Martin Erat
, and David Legwand
all wearing an "A" tonight for the Preds.6:24 pm CT
Carolina scores with 14 seconds left in the five-on-three. The Preds did a pretty good job in coverage; limited the Canes chances. O'Sullivan with the goal, assisted by Anton Babchuk and Jeff Skinner. Kevin Klein
blocked Skinner's initial shot, but Babchuk fished out the rebound and passed the puck cross ice to O'Sullivan on the right wing boards. O'Sullivan blasted a low shot just before Ryan Suter
could slide out for the shot block.6:24 pm CT
And now Nashville called for too many men on the ice. Carolina will have a five-on-three for 1:19. Legwand-Bouillon-Laakso getting the first crack at the PK.6:24 pm CT
5:01 left in the first period. Preds are going to be shorthanded. Aaron Johnson called for holding. The Johnson-Laakso d-pairing has had a slow start here in the first period.6:19 pm CT
Still scoreless, but a good flurry by the Preds late in the power-play. Blum triggered the action on two occassions, first with a wrister from the point that was deflected and led to a dangerous scramble and then later in the sequence by pinching in from the point and getting a feed from point-blank range in the slot (good glove deflection by Pogge to keep the game scoreless).6:16 pm CT
11:01 left in the first period and the Preds take to the power-play. Brett Carson for Carolina called for holding. 6:13 pm CT
Kind of quiet start to the game tonight. Lines so far have been: Andersson-Legwand-Ward / Wilson-O'Reilly-Erat / Halischuk-Smithson-Tootoo / Thuresson-Lundmark-Flynn. On defense the pairings have been: Suter-Klein / Blum-Bouillon / Johnson-Laakso.6:04 pm CT
And the puck is dropped.
Dekanich getting the start in net for the Preds. Justin Pogge getting the nod for Carolina.4:08 pm CT
