Preds Prospect Nick Spaling Wins OHL Title, Nets Series Winning Goal
/ Nashville Predators
Nashville Predators prospect Nick Spaling, a second round pick in last summer's draft, scored the game-winning goal in Game 7 of the Ontario Hockey League Championship Series as No. 1 seed Kitchener beat Belleville 4-1 on Monday night (May 12).
Kitchener took a 1-0 lead late in the first period, before Spaling expanded the advantage to 2-0 with a power-play goal 1:31 into the second. Belleville answered with a power-play tally of its own late in the second period to pull the score to 2-1, but Kitchener scored at the 6:18 mark of the third period to regain the two goal cushion and added an empty net tally with 49 seconds remaining in regulation to close out the scoring.
Spaling finished with 14 goals and 30 points in 20 playoff games, third in the league in playoff goals and fifth in points. His eight power-play goals were tied for the OHL playoff lead this season.
During the regular season he posted 38 goals and 72 points in 56 games, tied for 16th in the league in goals. His 25 power-play scores were second most during the regular season, while his six game-winning goals were tied for 14th. Spaling also added a goal in the OHL All-Star Game.
Kitchener is hosting this year's Memorial Cup Tournament, which runs from May 16-25.
