The Nashville Predators finished out their preseason slate with a 7-1 defeat at the hands of the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena on Saturday night.
Cody Hodgson scored the lone tally for the Preds who close their exhibition schedule with a 3-2-1 record.
“It was disappointing,” Head Coach Peter Laviolette said of the team’s performance. “We didn’t play well start to finish and we were beaten in too many areas tonight.
“The other night [against Columbus], I thought we worked and competed and skated; tonight was the opposite. There were definitely things we did wrong systematically, but you have to be working and skating and competing first.”
After a first period which saw the Blue Jackets outscore the Preds 3-0, with goals from Nick Foligno, Rene Bourque and Jared Boll, Nashville started the second by capitalizing on a turnover.
Calle Jarnkrok retrieved a loose puck behind the Jackets cage and fed it to a wide-open Hodgson in the slot who beat Sergei Bobrovsky to the glove side to put the Preds on the board.
Brandon Saad poked home a puck in the crease for a 4-1 Columbus lead to head into the second intermission, and then wristed home his second of the night in the third stanza. Foligno registered his second goal before Brandon Dubinsky made it 7-1, the final tally of the night.
“We just didn’t play our game at all, and they kind of embarrassed us tonight,” defenseman Roman Josi said. “It was a bad game and we have to forget about it, but still remember it at the same time and get ready for Thursday.”
The Predators will begin the 2015-16 regular season on Thursday night when they host the Carolina Hurricanes at Bridgestone Arena.
