Predators, Sommet Center Partner with Smurfit-Stone To "Go Green"

by Press Release / Nashville Predators
Nashville, Tenn. (August 12, 2008) – The Nashville Predators, the Sommet Center and Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation today announced a partnership encouraging recycling and waste reduction throughout the facility. The “Go Green” initiative goes along with the National Hockey League’s “Green Plan,” whose goal is to reduce the League's carbon footprint and improve its overall environmental impact.

“The team and the Sommet Center provide a visible platform for the ‘Go Green’ initiative,” Predators President of Business Operations Ed Lang said. “The amount of recyclable material collected on a game or event night is significant, and we hope that it encourages our fans recycling at home, work and play.”

New for the 2008-09 season, the Sommet Center will be equipped with Smurfit-Stone recycling stations for plastics, paper and aluminum. The arena, and its concession partners Sports Service and Levy Restaurants will also utilize more products like cups, napkins and plates that are made from recyclable and compostable materials.

Also in an attempt to move toward a “paperless” business environment, the Predators and Sommet Center will increase the use of electronic forms and manuals including the team’s 2008-09 media guide in addition to suite-holder guides, menus and order forms, further reducing their dependence on paper products.

“We appreciate Smurfit-Stone’s efforts and look forward to working with them in using the building and its events to help educate patrons on the benefits of recycling.” Senior Vice President/General Manager of the Sommet Center Hugh Lombardi said.

“We are excited about the opportunity to join the Predators and the Sommet Center on this important initiative,” said Tim Bebout, area manager for Smurfit-Stone’s recycling operations. “This is a great way to take materials out of the waste stream that otherwise would have gone to a landfill. It’s good for the environment and with paper recycling at an all-time high, it’s also good business.”
