Pihlstrom Scores Twice vs. Canada

Antti Pihlstrom scored twice vs. Canada while Alexander Radulov picked up his second assist on the tournament in Russia's win over Switzerland to conclude the Qualifying Round at the 2008 World Championships.


After Canada scored 33 seconds into the game, Pihlstrom netted a shorthanded goal to tie the game at the 5:39 mark of the opening frame. The Canadians added a shorthanded goal midway through the first period to grab a 2-1 lead. Canada added a pair of second period scores, including a second shorthanded goal. The Canadians pushed the lead to 5-1 before Pihlstrom scored his second of the game. The teams traded goals in the final two minutes of play to finish the scoring 6-3. With the win Canada claimed the No. 1 seed in Group F, while Finland fell into the No. 2 seed.

Team USA scored three times in each period for a 9-1 win over Norway. Brandon Dubinsky led the US with a hat trick, his first three goals of the tournament. Dustin Brown and Patrick Kane also had three point games to lead the Americans. With the win, Team USA finished with nine points, good for the No. 3 seed and a rematch with Finland in the Quarterfinals.

Germany beat Latvia 5-3 in the other Group F game, allowing Norway to earn the No. 4 seed and a rematch with Canada in the Quarterfinals.

Russia claimed the No. 1 seed in Group E with a 5-3 win over Switzerland. Russia scored three times in a 3:24 span late in the first period to claim a 3-0 lead. Radulov assisted on the game's opening goal, 15:21 into the first period to start the Russian barrage. Russia pushed the lead to 4-0 midway through the second frame. Switzerland scored twice early in the third period to draw the score to 4-2, but Maxim Sushinsky added an empty net goal with 2:35 left in regulation. The Swiss answered a minute later, but was unable to draw any closer. With the win Russia claimed the No. 1 seed in Group E, while Switzerland fell to the No. 4 seed and rematch in the Quarterfinals. Czech Republic and Sweden will meet in the other Group E Quarterfinal.
