VAN-Capper V2

The Nashville Predators dug themselves out of an early three-goal deficit to defeat the Vancouver Canucks, 4-3, in a shootout Saturday at Rogers Arena.
Nino Niederreiter had a goal and an assist, Mattias Ekholm had two assists, Matt Duchene scored the lone goal of the shootout and Juuse Saros made 43 saves for the Preds, who have won consecutive games for the first time since defeating the San Jose Sharks in back-to-back games in the NHL Global Series in Prague to open the season.

THREE TAKEAWAYS

Gross Gets Two
Preds defenseman Jordan Gross scored his first two career NHL goals Saturday. His first came on the power play, when he redirected a shot from Nino Niederreiter to cut Vancouver's lead to 3-1 early in the second period. His second came in the third period on a wrist shot from the point to bring the Preds within one.

NSH@VAN: Gross tips in PPG in 2nd period

Nashville recalled Gross from the AHL's Milwaukee Admirals on Oct. 31 when Borowiecki was placed on injured reserve with an upper body injury. Gross, playing in his first season with the Predators organization, had seven points (1g-6a) in his first six AHL games with Milwaukee. Prior to making his Preds debut on Thursday at Calgary, Gross made his 10th career NHL appearance with the Colorado Avalanche against Nashville on Dec. 16, 2021.
Give Me Fuel, Give Me Fire, Give Me Nino Niederreiter
Niederreiter, who scored five goals in his first 11 games with Nashville to begin 2022-23, extended his team lead in goals to six with the game-tying goal against Vancouver. He gathered the puck in front of the net on a feed from Ekholm and found the back of the net to knot the score at 3-3 at 2:41 of the third period.

Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting
Tanner Jeannot had not one, but two fighting majors in Saturday's game - his second and third of the 2022-23 campaign. He dropped the gloves in the first period against Riley Stillman after a heavy hip check into the boards, then again with Tyler Myers who retaliated for Jeannot's hit on Ethan Bear in the second period. In addition to the five-minute fighting major, Myers also received two minutes for instigating and a 10-minute misconduct.
The Preds led the NHL with 61 major penalties in 2021-22. (The team with the next-highest number of majors was the Minnesota Wild with 36.) The only player in the league last season with more majors than Jeannot's 14 was teammate Borowiecki (15).

THEY SAID IT

Jordan Gross on scoring his first two NHL career goals against Vancouver:
"Yeah, it felt great. I didn't have the best start, personally, and it felt great to get one back for the team there… As a D-man scoring your first one from down there was a little uncharacteristic, but I'll take it… It's just really special. It's something I've worked for for a long time and felt great… I got the puck and I'll probably give that to my parents."

Mattias Ekholm on Jordan Gross's first two NHL goals against Vancouver:
"We're really impressed with him. And with the start too, I mean he was on for a couple of the against goals and it's tough in a building like this on a Saturday as a young guy. And then he just stood in there and kept playing well and got rewarded with two goals. So good on him. He's looked really good for us in two games. So, hopefully he keeps that up."
John Hynes on Jordan Gross's first two NHL goals against Vancover:
"It was nice and we needed it. We put ourselves in a big hole there and that's one of the reasons why we have him on the team. He's shown that he's got the ability to produce offense, he's got good vision, he can move the puck and obviously the power play goal he got was pretty good. You can see his offensive instincts down around the net, and then obviously, the goal from the blue line was a great shot."
John Hynes on improvements after the first period:
I thought we weren't very good in the first period. I thought Vancouver beat us all over the ice and our speed, our competitiveness and our execution wasn't at the level that it needed to be. I thought we came out in the second and got a little bit more to our game. We did enough tonight to be able to find a way to win, but I think we've got better than this.
Mattias Ekholm on improvements after the first period:
"Our start was not good at all and we knew that coming off that first period - we had to be way better. I thought we were a little bit better in the second and got a goal that got us in the game. And then I thought we had more going into the third and the guys laid it all on the line and I thought as soon as we scored that first goal, I felt like we had a mental advantage on them. They seemed to be on their heels a little bit. They were just flipping pucks out and we kept coming at them and got another goal and after that, I thought we pushed for a fourth and it didn't come until the shootout. So it was a really nice comeback win for us and big for this group. I think it talks a lot about the commitment and the care we have in this group and it just hasn't gone our way and tonight we had to get out from behind. So it was a really greasy but really good, huge two-point road win for us."
John Hynes on Juuse Saros's 42-save performance:
"He's been battling and fighting kind of like our team here a little bit. He hasn't gotten a ton of traction, but tonight he was a big reason why we were able to stay in the game and then find a way to get ourselves back in it. And he was critical and got some huge saves in the second period on their power play. And then I thought the rest of the game when they had some opportunities, he looked really solid."
Mattias Ekholm on Juuse Saros's 42-save performance:
"I feel like he's been playing really well, things just haven't gone his way or he's had some unlucky bounces and unlucky breaks. But the way he came back… He's always the most honest guy in here and he knows he should probably have had that first one. But other than that, in the second period he kept us alive, he kept us in it. We let up some breakaways, there was a five-on-three and a number of power plays. So good on him. He's the backbone of this team. And he showed it last year. He's going to show us this year again, so it was really good for him."
John Hynes on building consistency:
"Well, I think we've got to focus on the last few games - when we had success, what we were doing - but I'd still like us to be a little more consistent. I think we've got to come out more ready to play the game that gives us the chance to win, particularly in the first period. And I'll credit the guys, we came from behind to win a game, but it's not the right recipe to come in and have a first period like that. But I liked our compete, I liked our mental toughness throughout the game to be able to get ourselves going. But I think we can build off some things here."

UP NEXT

The Preds will continue their five-game road trip with a visit to the Seattle Kraken at Climate Pledge Arena. The puck drops Tuesday at 9 p.m. CT, and the game will be nationally televised on TNT.
