Hornqvist, Koistinen Score Key Goals as Qualifying Round Nears End

by Jay Levin / Nashville Predators
Patric Hornqvist scored the game-winning goal, while Ville Koistinen scored to trigger Finland's comeback over Team USA in action on Day 10 of the 2008 World Championships.

The U.S. jumped out to a 2-0 lead on second period goals by Tom Gilbert and Phil Kessel. However, Ville Koistinen scored a power-play goal 2:12 into the third period to start the Finland comeback. Teemu Selanne tied the game in the middle of the third and Mikko Koivu netted the game-winning goal with 3:50 remaining in regulation. Finland improved to 11 points in the Qualifying Round, good for second place in Group F, while the US remained at six points, currently third place in the group.

Sweden opened the scoring 6:03 into the second period, but Martin Erat picked up an assist on a power-play goal in the middle of the second period to tie the game. The Swedes took a one-goal lead on two other occassions, only to see the Czechs respond to knot the score at 3-3 late in regulation. Hornqvist then netted his fifth goal of the tournament with 4:53 remaining in the third. Marcus Nilson scored his second goal of the game, an empty net tally with 26 seconds left in the game. With the result, Sweden and Czech Republic both finished the Qualifying Round stage with nine points, currently good for a tie with Switzerland, a 7-2 winner of Denmark, for second place in Group E.

Latvia beat Norway, 4-1, in the other Group F game, keeping the Latvians alive for a spot in the Quarterfinals heading into tomorrow's games.

Canada and Finland skate against each other on Monday to determine the No. 1 seed in Group F. The other team will grab the No. 2 seed. Team USA and Norway square off. A US win or overtime loss would give the Americans the No. 3 seed, while a US regulation loss would give Norway the No. 3 seed and USA the No. 4 seed. Latvia, which faces Germany, could still qualify for the Quarterfinals by picking up one more point than Norway in Monday's games.

In Group E, Russia and Switzerland face off with that group's No. 1 seed on the line. The winner, whether in regulation or overtime, would claim the No. 1 seed. Russia would finish with the No. 2 seed with a loss. Switzerland would claim the No. 2 seed with an overtime loss or would fall to the No. 4 seed with a regulation loss. Sweden is locked into the No. 3 seed, but Czech Republic would finish with the No. 2 seed if Switzerland finishes at No. 4 or the Czechs would be No. 4 if Switzerland finishes No. 1 or 2.
