Hamhuis, Radulov Meet for Gold at 2008 World Championships

Alexander Radulov and Russia shutout Finland 4-0 in the first Semifinal, while Dan Hamhuis and Canada edged Sweden 5-4 in the late game to set up a Canada/Russia match-up for the Gold Medal at the 2008 World Championships. The Gold Medal game will be played on Sunday in Quebec City. Finland and Sweden will play for the Bronze Medal on Saturday.


Russia claimed a 1-0 lead on Sergei Fedorov's goal 13:41 into the game, with assists to Alexander Semin and Alexander Ovechkin. Danis Zaripov made the score 2-0 early in the second period. The Russians pushed the lead to three on Alexei Morozov's goal with 7:45 remaining and closed out the scoring wiht Maxim Sushinsky's empty netter.

Canada and Sweden traded first period goals with the Canadians getting a power-play tally from Dany Heatley 5:35 into the game and the Swedes matching with an even strength goal in the final minute of the frame. Sweden grabbed a brief lead 2:46 into the second period, but Canada answered with its second power-play goal of the game 1:12 later. The teams traded goals 2:55 apart midway through the period, this time the Canadians with an even strength score and the Swedes on the power-play. But Canada finished the period with two more goals, including its third power-play marker of the night, to take a 5-3 lead into the final period of play. Fredrik Warg scored with 5:39 remaining in regulation to cut the Canadian lead to one goal, but Team Sweden was unable to net the equalizer. Dan Hamhuis did not figure in the scoring for Canada, but did record a +1 plus/minus rating, while skating a team-high 21:52 ice time.
