Analysis: Volchenkov brings a physical, defense-first mentality that was previously missing on the Nashville Predators blue line. The Russian defenseman has earned the reputation of being an excellent shot blocker across his 11 seasons in the NHL. The 32-year-old will likely step into a role on the second or third pairing for the Predators and guide Nashville’s young blueliners. (Volchenkov went to the Stanley Cup Final while a member of the Ottawa Senators and a teammate of Mike Fisher. The defenseman also played with Matt Cullen while playing in Canada’s capital.)

What They’re Saying:

Anton Volchenkov: "I like to do everything [out on the ice]. My role is usualy penalty kill and blocking shots. I want to help my team however I can. A big hit, strong defensive play - that's what I try to bring. Nashville was already a strong team last year, so I'm happy to see what I [can add]."

Matt Cullen: “He’s a really solid D-man. He’s one of the better shotblockers that I’ve ever played with. Volchenkov is a really good team guy; the kind of guy you want to have on your penalty kill too. He brings that physical, hard-hitting and good teammate element. The kind of guy you don’t like to play against, but want on your side.”

“I think I gained a better appreciation of his game when we spent some time together in Ottawa. He’s kind of got that warrior mentality. That’s just what you want when you’re headed into the playoffs.”

David Poile: “Anton provides a strong veteran presence that will complement our young, talented defensive corps nicely. He is a physical, left-handed shooting defenseman who can match up with top-line forwards and effectively kill penalties.”
