MUSIC CITY TO HOST MORE SEC MEN’S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENTS THAN ANY OTHER CITY DURING THIS DECADE NASHVILLE, Tenn., (Sept. 3, 2010) -
Representatives at the Nashville Sports Council announced today that it has reached an agreement with the Southeastern Conference (SEC) to host the 2015, 2016 and 2019 SEC Men’s Basketball Tournaments at the Bridgestone Arena. The 2013 tournament was previously awarded to Nashville.
“This is a huge win for the Nashville community,” said Dave Cooley, Nashville Sports Council chairman. “The Nashville Sports Council and Bridgestone Arena have a proven track record for hosting postseason SEC basketball events and we look forward to our continued partnership with the SEC to make the tournaments a great experience for the student-athletes and fans from the respective universities.”
The Nashville Sports Council hosted the 2001, 2006 and most recently the 2010 SEC Men’s Tournament. These three events produced nearly $41 million in cumulative economic impact for Nashville and millions of national television viewers. The 2010 SEC Men’s Tournament delivered an $18.4 million economic impact and overall tournament attendance was 191,852.
“The SEC Tournament back in March energized our entire downtown,” Nashville Mayor Karl Dean said. “Our hotels, our restaurants, the entertainment district on Lower Broad all benefited from the thousands of visitors that the tournament drew. It is tremendous that the SEC has decided to return to Music City four more times in the coming years. Downtown is only going to get better, especially with the opening of our new downtown convention center campus in 2013. The tournaments are sure to be a great experience for the fans and a great win for our tourism industry.”
The SEC looks forward to future events in Nashville.
“We are excited about continuing our relationship with the city of Nashville,” said SEC Commissioner Mike Slive. “Nashville provides SEC teams and fans a great postseason experience. This past year’s tournament at Bridgestone Arena was one of the most exciting in recent memory.”
Nashville will serve as host for the 2013 SEC Men’s Tournament, March 14-17 at the Bridgestone Arena and serves as host for the SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament in 2011 and 2012, the NCAA Men’s 2nd & 3rd Round Basketball Tournament and the 2014 NCAA Women’s Final Four.
“Immediately following the success of the 2010 tournament, we have been in proactive discussions with the SEC for several months on future basketball events,” said Scott Ramsey, president and CEO, Nashville Sports Council. “We are appreciative of the SEC’s continued confidence in the Nashville Sports Council and city of Nashville to stage these premier sporting events. They will deliver incredible economic development results for our city.”
