Andrews and Leipsic Taking Care Of Business At The 2013 MasterCard Memorial Cup

by Jimi Russell / Nashville Predators

The 2013 MasterCard Memorial Cup is well underway in Saskatoon, Sask., as Predators prospects Brent Andrews and Brendan Leipsic have played their way into the final rounds of the tournament.

Andrews (seventh round/2011) and the tournament favorite Halifax Mooseheads have made it into the Cup final after surviving an early scare from the Saskatoon Blades. After defeating Leipsic and the Portland Winterhawks, 7-4, in the opening game of the tournament, the Mooseheads were surprised by the Blades, 5-2. Halifax responded in the final game of round-robin play on Tuesday night with a 9-2 drubbing of the OHL’s London Knights. Andrews has tallied one goal in three games thus far. Halifax must now wait through the tiebreaker game on Thursday and the semifinals game on Friday before playing for the Cup on Sunday.

Leipsic (third round/2012) and the Winterhawks were put in a must-win situation after falling to Halifax last Saturday, and they rose to the occasion. Portland defeated London 6-3 on Monday night and secured their semifinals berth on Wednesday with a 4-2 win over Saskatoon. Leispic posted a goal and a +3 rating in Wednesday night’s game against the Blades, and has recorded two points (1g-1a) in three games for Portland. The Winterhawks now await the winner of Thursday night’s tiebreaker between London and Saskatoon.
