Wilkes-Barre/Scranton claimed its first regular-season AHL Eastern Conference East Division title with a 5-4 win against Norfolk on Friday night.

The victory raised the Baby Penguins’ record to 48-18-5-5, good for 106 points.

The team’s point total now stands seven better than the second-place Hershey Bears, who dropped a 5-4 overtime decision to the Philadelphia Phantoms on Friday. Hershey can do no better than 105 points on the season after the defeat.

Krys Kolanos, who has been red-hot since his arrival in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton via trade from Carolina, scored again for the Baby Penguins. Ryan Stone, Matt Hussey, Kenny Corupe and Stephen Dixon all had goals.

Dany Sabourin stopped 26 of 30 shots to earn the win in goal.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has set new team records for wins, points, road wins and road points during the 2006 regular season and will be making its fifth trip to the Calder Cup Playoffs. Dates and times for all Baby Penguins postseason contests will be announced at a later date.
