The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins open the AHL Calder Cup playoffs Friday at 7:05 p.m. when they welcome the Norfolk Admirals to Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza.
The Penguins finished second in the AHL’s East Division with a 51-23-2-4 record and 108 points. Norfolk also finished with 108 points, but the Penguins had one more win and, therefore, got the higher seed.
Jonathan Filewich (30+26 in 80 games) tied Kyle Brodziak (24+32 in 62 games) for the team lead in scoring with 56 points. Defenseman Micki DuPont was named an AHL first-team all-star as he finished the regular season with 51 points (18+33) in 78 games. He had 101 penalty minutes and 10 power-play goals. He succeeded Alain Nasreddine as the Penguins’ captain as well.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton plays host to Game 2 on Saturday. The series shifts to Norfolk for the next three games. It returns to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for Games 6 and 7 (if necessary).
