HERSHEY, Pa. – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins saw the Hershey Bears pull away early in the third period in a 3-1 loss at the GIANT Center in their final game of the preseason.
Hershey took a 1-0 edge into the third period of play and needed only 26 seconds to double its lead. Penguins netminder Brad Thiessen was unable to control a shot from Joel Champagne and the rebound dropped to right post for Alex Berry to shovel home.
Soon thereafter, the Penguins looked to find the scoreboard during a 5-on-4 advantage, but it was Jeff Taffe intercepting a pass and scoring on a shorthanded breakaway at 1:51 of the period.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton found the back of the net with 12:44 left in regulation as Brian Gibbons fed Jayson Megna during a 2-on-1 for the easy tap-in past Hershey goalie Braden Holtby.
A scoreless tie between the Penguins and Bears was broken at 10:52 of the second period during four-on-four hockey. Mattias Sjogren found Brett Flemming alone in the high slot, where he walked in and ripped a wrist shot under the glove of Thiessen.
