PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins are moving on to the second round of the Calder Cup Playoffs after defeating the Providence Bruins 5-4 in double overtime Saturday night at Dunkin’ Donuts Center.
Rookie Jake Guentzel put forth a two-goal, two assist performance including the overtime game-winner as the Penguins swept their opening round best-of-five series with the Bruins, three games to none.
It didn’t take long for the Penguins to strike first, as Guentzel picked the top corner 35 seconds into the contest for a 1-0 Wilkes-Barre/Scranton lead.
After Zane McIntyre came up with a series of highlight reel saves to keep the Penguins at bay, Dominik Simon redirected a shot through the Bruins goaltender’s legs and into the net. Simon’s power play goal put his team up 2-0 at 10:42 of the first.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton earned another man advantage marker at 5:36 of the middle frame with Daniel Sprong wiring a long range shot past McIntyre for a 3-0 lead.
Austin Czarnik got Providence on the board with a slick one-timer to the top corner at 13:39 of the second period.
The Penguins took back its three-goal lead thanks to Tim Erixon’s goal with just 1:32 left in the second.
Providence, feeling the pressure of their season being on the line, scored two quick goals to start the third period. Suddenly, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton saw its 4-1 lead reduced to 4-3.
Czarnik scored again at 16:01 of the third, tying the game, 4-4. And for the third-straight time, the Penguins and Bruins went to overtime.
The Penguins’ second round opponent and schedule is still to be determined. They await the winner of the Hershey Bears and Portland Pirates best-of-five opening round series.
