Hockey viewers in the United States can tune in to the NHL Network on Sunday night for the final of the Memorial Cup tournament, the championship of junior hockey.
The Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors, the host team in the tournament, will face Penguins prospect Simon Despres
and the Saint John Sea Dogs, champions of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, in a game that gets under way at 7 p.m. ET.
The Sea Dogs qualified for the final by going 2-1-0 in round-robin play, including a 4-3 win against the Majors in the tournament opener. The Majors beat the Kootenay Ice 3-1 on Friday night in the semifinal to advance to the championship game.
Despres (6-foot-4, 225 pounds) helped the Sea Dogs earn their first-ever President’s Trophy as QMJHL champions after besting the Gatineau Olympiques in six games. The 19-year-old blueliner scored 12 points (4G-8A) in 19 postseason games for Saint John. Despres earned the Emile “Butch” Bouchard Award as the QMJHL’s Best Defenseman after posting 41 points (13G-28A) and a plus-29 in 47 games in 2010-11.
