Try Hockey for Free Day

by Staff Writer / Pittsburgh Penguins

On November 3, USA Hockey and over 500 local programs across the United States are encouraging kids ages 4 to 9 to try youth hockey for free at local participating rinks for Try Hockey for Free Day.

An estimated 14,000 kids are expected to hit the ice for the first time as part of the initiative, which is part of the NHL’s Come Play Hockey Month.

“USA Hockey’s ‘Try Hockey for Free Day’ is a great initiative, and one that we have encouraged our local facilities to embrace,” said Penguins executive director of strategic planning Rich Hixon. “In Pittsburgh, we have experienced significant growth in participation levels at the 8 and under age group. Much of this growth is directly related to programs like USA Hockey’s Try Hockey for Free Day and our Little Penguins Learn to Play Program, which provides free head-to-toe equipment to 1,000 children annually.”

The Little Penguins Learn to Play Program is entering its fifth season, and is done with the help of Dick’s Sporting Goods, Reebok, Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. To sign up for the program or for more information click here.

The Try Hockey for Free Day will be held in six rinks in the Pennsylvania area. Rink information can be found below. For more information on USA Hockey’s Try Hockey for Free Day click here.
