Trio of Penguins Prospects Honored with Weekly Awards

by Staff Writer / Pittsburgh Penguins

Three Pittsburgh Penguins prospects – forward Scott Wilson and goaltenders Sean Maguire and Matt Murray – were honored with weekly awards by their respective leagues earlier this week.

Scott Wilson

Wilson and Maguire were both honored by Hockey East, with Wilson being named Athletic Republic Player of the Week and Maguire the Pro Ambitions Co-Rookie of the Week. Murray was named Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Goaltender of the Week.

Wilson, who is in his sophomore season with the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, tallied five points (3G-2A) in two games against Vermont over the weekend. Wilson, 20, scored twice in a 4-2 win on Friday night, and followed that up with a three-point (1G-2A) effort in Saturday’s 6-3 victory.

Sean Maguire

The 5-foot-11, 166-pound Wilson leads UMass-Lowell in both points (18) and assists (11) this season. He has recorded at least one point in nine of his last 11 contests. In two years with the River Hawks, Wilson has been a point-per-game contributor with 56 points (23G-33A) in 56 games.

Maguire continues to star in his freshman campaign at Boston University after being named co-rookie of the week for the second time this season (also the week of Nov. 26). Maguire, 19, stopped 37-of-38 shots in a 5-1 road win over Merrimack on Friday night.

A fourth-round (113th overall) draft pick by the Penguins in June, Maguire, has now won five-straight starts, posting a 0.99 goals-against average and .966 save percentage with two shutouts during his run. Maguire ranks seventh in the NCAA in save percentage (.938) and ninth in goals-against average (1.83) this year – with both figures leading Hockey East.

Matt Murray

Murray, 18, posted a perfect 3-0 record last week with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) – while posting a 1.33 goals-against average and a .954 save percentage. His efforts included a 26-save performance in a 4-2 upset win over the OHL’s top team, the London Knights, on Sunday.

Murray, who was drafted by the Penguins in the third round (83rd overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft, has an overall record this season of 19-14-1 with a 3.36 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage.
