For the second consecutive year, Team Pennsylvania will compete in the prestigious Brick Invitational Hockey Tournament in Edmonton, Alberta under the dome of the West Edmonton Mall Ice Palace from June 29 to July 5.
Select teams from all over the North American continent attend this renowned summer tournament, which offers promising young hockey players and parents an opportunity to compete in an elite international environment.
Team Pennsylvania, which is co-sponsored by the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers, will be competing against programs from Massachusetts (Boston), California, Illinois (Chicago), Connecticut, Michigan (Detroit), Minnesota, and a majority of the Canadian provinces, such as Quebec (Montreal), Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario (which has two teams from Toronto), British Columbia (Vancouver) and Manitoba (Winnipeg). Each team will be comprised of Super Novice players, born on or after January 1, 2005.
All 14 teams will play six round-robin games, followed by a semifinal and championship game. Following each game, the tournament will hand out a first, second and third star trophy to select players. The tournament’s top player and MVP will each receive an autographed trophy hockey stick and a pair of skates.
With youth hockey on the rise in the Tri-State area, the Penguins are looking to build an elite program that will entice young players in different age groups to grow and develop in a professional setting while competing against other programs from in the surrounding area.
This year, the Penguins Elite Squirt Major Team, one of the 14 Penguins elite teams playing at the Triple-A level, has five representatives on the 2015 roster. Forwards Jeffrey Mitchell and Connor Ferguson, defensemen Brady Gilbert and Davis Ross and goalie Zack Ferris will put on the Team Pennsylvania jersey as products of the Penguins youth hockey system, which has grown tremendously in the last few years.
At the 2014 Brick Tournament, the Penguins youth hockey program featured six players on Team Pennsylvania, which went 3-3 (9 points) in the round robin portion of the tournament.
Team Pennsylvania will play the Detroit Red Wings team at 2:10 p.m., Monday. At 8:50 p.m., Team Pennsylvania will play the BC Junior Canucks. Following their first two games on Monday, Team Pennsylvania will faceoff with the Toronto Bulldogs at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Wednesday, Team Pennsylvania will play Team Minnesota at 2:10 p.m. Their final two games will be against Team California (Thursday, 12:30 p.m.) and the Saskatchewan JR Pats (Friday, 7:30 a.m.).
Notable Brick Tournament alumni includes 2015 NHL Draft Picks Noah Hanifin (Carolina Hurricanes, fifth overall) and Nick Merkley (Arizona Coyotes, 30th overall); 2014 NHL Draft pick Hadyn Fleury (Hurricanes, seventh overall); Montreal Canadians winger Brendan Gallagher, Buffalo Sabres center Tyler Ennis, Minnesota Wild defenseman Jared Spurgeon, St. Louis Blues defenseman Jay Bouwmeester and Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Dion Phaneuf.
