Maxime Talbot’s goal with 22 seconds left in the second period Sunday gave the black team a 5-4 win in the Pittsburgh Penguins' third training camp scrimmage at Mellon Arena.
It also gave the black squad a 2-1 series championship for the three-day tournament, which was open to the public.
The white team jumped to a 3-0 lead. Daniel Carcillo converted a penalty shot, while John LeClair and Jonathan Filewich both tallied goals.
Late in the first period, Evgeni Malkin brought the Mellon Arena crowd to its feet once again. His one-timer off a Sergei Gonchar pass soared over Marc-Andre Fleury’s shoulder and tucked under the crossbar. The goal trimmed the black team’s deficit to 3-1.
In the second period, Talbot converted a penalty shot to make it a 3-2 game. However, Ryan Whitney’s successful penalty shot put the white team up, 4-2.
Ryan Stone scored off a rebound and Tyler Kennedy converted a penalty shot to knot the game at 4-all. Talbot won the game when his penalty shot trickled into the net late in the second period.
The Penguins hit the road for a three-day Canadian Maritimes roadtrip. The Penguins play the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and then meet the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in Moncton, New Brunswick.
