by Staff Writer / Pittsburgh Penguins

The Robert Morris University men’s ice hockey team picked up this season where it left off last year – with success.

The Colonials were crowned the Nye Frontier Classic champions Saturday evening in Anchorage, Alaska, after they defeated CHA foe Wayne State (0-2), 4-1. The Colonials also defeated nationally ranked Boston University Friday night at the Classic. The Colonials started the 2007-08 season, 2-0, which marks the first time that has happened in the programs history.

“I can’t say enough how proud I am of this team and the effort that they gave this entire weekend in Alaska,” said head coach Derek Schooley. “We played great defense all weekend and combined that with stellar goaltending. We received many timely goals from many different players.”

RMU, which plays Ohio State at Mellon Arena on Nov. 16 in the 2007 Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase, picked up Saturday in the first period where it left off in the third period of Friday night’s contest, by scoring the game first four goals, including two markers in the first session. Senior Ryan Cruthers tallied the games first goal 7:06 into the game. Logan Bittle and Kyle Burton picked up assists on the play. Freshman Nathan Longpre scored his first career goal and the game-winning goal with 6:30 remaining in the first period giving the Colonials a, 2-0, edge at intermission. Sean Berkstresser, an Apollo native, and Jason Towsley tallied assists on Longpre’s goal.

The Colonials continued their offensive clinic in the second period tallying two more goals in the final five minutes of the period. Towsley tallied his second goal of the season, from Longpre and Dave Cowan. David Boguslawski notched his first goal of the season on a 5-on-3 power-play with just 27 seconds left in the second period.

Wayne State’s Jon Grabarek broke up RMU’s shutout bid with a power-play goal at the 17:06 mark of the third period, when he beat sophomore goalie Wes Russell.

Russell played the final 9:05 of the game who came in to spell senior goalie Christian Boucher, who stopped all 19 shots that he faced.

The Colonials out shot Wayne State 22-20 and went 1-for-8 on the power-play with eight shots.
