The Pittsburgh Penguins have named Mark Recchi, Sergei Gonchar, and Gary Roberts alternate captains for the 2007-08 season, it was announced Thursday by Executive Vice President/General Manager Ray Shero.
Recchi will wear the “A” on his sweater for the third consecutive season. He is entering his 19th NHL season and seventh overall with the Penguins. Entering the 2007-08 campaign, he has scored 1,333 career points (508 goals, 825 assists) in 1,338 NHL games.
Gonchar and Roberts will share duties as alternate captain. Gonchar will wear the “A” on his uniform during home games this season while Roberts will wear the “A” during road contests. Gonchar has been an alternate captain for the Penguins in each of the past two seasons. He is entering his 13th NHL season and has accumulated 550 points (173 goals, 377 assists) in 826 career games.
Roberts will be wearing the “A” in a Penguins uniform for the first time this season. He is entering his 20th NHL season and prior to this year, he has played in 1,156 career NHL games scoring 888 points (431 goals, 457 assists).
Sidney Crosby was named captain of the Penguins on May 31st. He is the youngest player in NHL history to be named team captain. The Penguins have not had a designated captain since Mario Lemieux announced his retirement in January 2006.
The Penguins open the regular season on Friday at Carolina before returning to Pittsburgh to face the defending Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Mellon Arena in the home opener.
